Home Business Budgeting, A Necessary Evil
Most of us avoid creating a budget like the
plague. A budget, though, is extremely important
to your home business survival and success, no
matter what the size of your business. Budgeting
can help you see where your business is coming
from and where it’s heading. It also allows you to
adjust along the way and make careful management
decisions for the future.
Creating a budget for your business involves
tracking income and expenses. More precisely, a
budget helps monitor spending and expenses versus
the amount of money your business brings in. After
coming up with a budget, there are some tips to
make sure controlling expenses doesn’t harm your
business.
While some expenses are completely controllable,
many aren’t. Plenty of home business owners kid
themselves that they can control all the expenses
of their enterprise, and that just isn’t true.
These uncontrollable expenses may be fixed or vary
in amount, and they can be unpredictable,
occurring suddenly and for different reasons. A
budget helps minimize the damage of such expenses
and helps home business owners’ deal with the
expenditures when they do arise.
Of course, some expenses are controllable, like
employee expenses, promotion costs or insurance
payments. The home business owner can decide to
increase or decrease these amounts depending on
how well the business is doing. A budget plan
helps home business owners see what financial
areas to adjust to suit overall purposes and
goals.
If financial adjustments or cutbacks in your home
business are required, the best method of dealing
with them is to maintain strong customer service
and client loyalty. Many entrepreneurs make their
first cuts in spending via reducing employee wages
through layoffs. That can be a bad idea; it leaves
the remaining workers (or the business owner) to
pick up the slack.
One result of wage cutbacks and layoffs is
customer service taking a hit. Workers overextend
themselves to make up for the loss in the labor
force. The business suffers when clients, who have
enjoyed great service, feel the lack of attention
and go to the competition. Budgeting gives a
clearer image of other areas to make cutbacks to
ensure first-rate customer service remains the
priority.
When planning a budget, decide whether to budget
fixed dollar amounts for each expense or determine
a percentage of income towards the cost. Most
people tend to budget set amounts for expenses.
Home business owners might be wiser to set a
percentage amount of income to cover expenses
instead.
For example, a business that earns $10,000 a month
may have a budget of 10% of this income to cover
employee wages. That means the funds required for
the expense will always be in proportion to what
funds are coming into the business. In this case,
the business has $1,000 allotted for payroll
purposes. If the business earns less, the payroll
budget reduces accordingly. If the business grows
and revenues climb, the budgeted percentage of
income climbs. Obviously more workers will be
needed to meet demands, and the money is there to
cover the expense.
While a budget may be frustrating to plan,
creating one is a vital part of knowing where
spending is occurring. It gives a good financial
portrait of your home business’s health. It may be
difficult to establish for a new business versus a
business that has been in operation for some time,
but even guessing at the beginning amounts and
adjusting along the way is better than letting
unplanned expenses control your home business
success.
