Attitude Pays Off
BY Larry Johnson, BizSiteBiz E-zine
This article could be called “choosing the right attitude”
because it is that quality that so often separates the winners
from the “also-rans.”
I am not discounting the natural abilities that we are born with.
The arguments still rage over how much of our personality and
ability levels and other traits are determined by genetics and
how much by environment.
The act of choosing one’s attitude has to be a quality that
is learned. The problem is that there are many people who go
through life without ever having discovered this very important
lesson. They drift through each day content to let fate hold the
key to their attitude for the day. If things go okay, they have
a good day. If they break their shoelace and the toast is
burned, the rest of the day is a total loss.
“Rainy days and Mondays always get me down….”or so goes the
lyrics to a once popular song. This is absolutely one of the
best ways to end up with a “bad” day. Selling yourself a negative
attitude by negative thinking.
I believe it was Zig Ziglar who once said, “Mondays aren’t
so bad. If you don’t believe me, try missing one of them!”
That makes Mondays just marvelous doesn’t it ?
For several years I taught a class in Psychology. As a part
of that class I tried to impart to students this concept of
choosing one’s own attitude. Here’s an analogy that I used
many times in class to illustrate my point:
When you got up this morning and dressed for school, you
looked in the closet and picked out that shirt and pants
to wear today. I’ll bet you had more than one shirt or pair
of pants from which to choose, didn’t you ? Today this is
what you chose to wear.
You have that same ability to choose your ATTITUDE for the
day. You CAN make it a good day. It is your choice. It is
your right! It is okay for you to have a good day. The
question is: Do you want to have a good day?
I appreciate it when salesclerks or others I encounter during
the day greet me with, “Have a good day!” I always return
this social gesture with something in-kind. However, I am
reminded that I am having a good day, and I don’t need someone
else’s permission to have it.
Attitude shows up in all that we do. Whether it be our
relationships with others we are closest to, our work, or
driving. (ever hear of road rage ?)
You will be better able to focus all your natural talents
on the task at hand if you have a good attitude. We only
have a certain amount of energy to get through the day.
Don’t waste your energy on a negative attitude.
Make a choice to, “Have a good day !”
